Reflection

     After this semester of courses, I came across a lot of new things, such as using GT to aid translation, giving campus tour in English and learning video editing skills....and so on. In fact, GT plays a big role in the process. At first, I think GT as a online dictionary, which you can check the unfamiliar English words immediately. Surely, we can't fully trust in it since there are still some grammatical errors are inevitable. However, in terms of the assistance function, it is really helpful. It help me save time to check the uncertain words. As a result, it is actually a great tool based on the unit of word instead of sentence. 

    Through the process of subtitle translation, I found that there were some Chinese-specific adjectives could not be translated by GT precisely, such as "百家爭鳴" and "QQ". The reason is the meanings of these words are not  the same as the literal meaning, so you have to be familiar with these words first then find the closet translations to the original meaning, which is the hardest part in translation. However, in the  Bantaoyao translation, GT definitely helped me a lot, for example, there were some proper nouns such as, "牡丹""菊花", words that are not normally used in daily life. In this situation, it's necessary to check the English translation by GT since these words have specific expressions, and thus the translations cannot be accomplished just by describing them. 

    Another GT's problem I found in my subtitle translation is it can't fully translate in the case of sentences with ambiguous subjects and clauses. For example, it translates the sentence "它要戳一個洞一個洞，這樣要讓它比較均勻的透氣" into " To poke a hole and a hole. This will make it more evenly ventilated. It's faster." The translation is stiff and not smooth. The final translation became better after Sherry's review. I revised it into " You need to poke lots of holes on the Cypress barrels since it will make the air more evenly ventilated. It will be faster."  The new version definitely sounds more understandable and smoothly. 

    All in all,  though there are some defects when we use GT to process texts, we still can't deny it helps us save lots of time in the process of translation. It mainly plays an auxiliary role, because the human language system is both grand and sophisticated, like as an saying goes, " Language has temperature." There are still some emotional elements that AI can't catch up like human does.
